SCAPE Scotland contributes to the development of Free Climate Emergency Training in Scotland
SCAPE Scotland, Skills Development Scotland and Keep Scotland Beautiful have developed an exciting programme of free accredited Climate Emergency Training taking place throughout May and June 2022.
SCAPE Scotland, Skills Development Scotland and Keep Scotland Beautiful have developed an exciting programme of free accredited Climate Emergency Training taking place throughout May and June 2022. The training aims to help upskill people involved with Scotland’s construction sector.
The training, which is accredited by The Carbon Literacy Project, is open to anyone living in Scotland over the age of 25 and involved with the construction sector. Climate Emergency Training offers participants the chance to understand the climate emergency and respond to the impacts, risks, responsibilities and opportunities ahead on their way to becoming certified as Carbon Literate.
What is Carbon Literacy?
Carbon Literacy is a term used to describe an awareness of climate change, and the climate impacts of human actions. It focuses on the knowledge and capacity required to create a positive shift in how mankind lives, works and behaves in response to climate change.

The construction sector is Scotland’s biggest user of natural resources, consuming approximately half of all resources used annually, with construction and demolition work also responsible for nearly half of all Scotland’s waste annually.
To help ensure Scotland’s workforce has the skills needed for the transition to a net zero economy, the Climate Emergency Skills Action Plan was published in December 2020, having been developed in partnership between the public, private and third sector.
The training is supported by Skills Development Scotland through the National Transition Training Fund, which is part of wider work related to Scotland’s Climate Emergency Skills Action Plan.
"Improving Carbon Literacy will enable the construction industry to plan for net zero and respond to the climate emergency during the delivery of projects. Through our Community Legacy Programme, SCAPE is bringing some of Scotland’s leading contractors and consultants together to support and enrich the training with real world, practical examples of how carbon reduction can be delivered in buildings and construction projects. We are delighted to have been able to bring colleagues from our partners, Morgan Sindall, Sweco, Balfour Beatty and Kier among others to support this work. We hope to continue to support these critical national efforts in the future."

Performance and Improvement Director, SCAPE
"This course is accredited by the Carbon Literacy Project and is an important certification for participants involved with the construction sector to take back into the workplace. Everyone involved with Scotland’s construction sector has a part to play in hitting our ambitious climate targets and this course offers a practical and immediate start on doing just that. Participants will find the training empowers them to take practical action on climate change and develop skills and experience they can apply to the sector, no matter what their role or what level of an organisation they work at."
