Triskelion digging in with New Roots project
SCAPE Scotland partner Triskelion is committed to adding social value to every project, so they headed along to a local community garden in Twechar to meet some young people and start digging.
Triskelion, a multi-disciplinary collaboration of Arcadis, Sweco and Fairhurst, is helping deliver the Westerhill Development Road project, part of East Dunbartonshire Council’s £35m Place and Growth Programme.
The New Roots Gardening Club is run by the Local Area Coordinators (LAC) at East Dunbartonshire Health and Social Care Partnership (HSCP) for youngsters aged 14 or over who have a diagnosis on the Autistic Spectrum and/or a learning disability.
Triskelion sent along several members of the Scottish team including Julia Currie, a student engineer from Glasgow Caledonian University working with Arcadis over the summer on a 10-week placement, to help out for a day.
"During my placement with Arcadis, I’ve seen how rewarding it is to engage with the communities where we work and I was delighted to get to spend some time in the garden and meet some of the people involved. We had a brilliant day and it was interesting to learn about the growing side of things and to see what a positive impact the project has on the young people involved.”

During the day she met some of the people benefitting from the project as well as volunteers and of course, Julia did her fair share of hard work; helping to build a raised flower bed where a variety of vegetables have been planted.
The project started life as an offshoot of the Milngavie Development Trust and grew with help from EDC’s Local Area Coordination Team and the Community Safety Team as in response to the Scottish Government's Learning Disability Strategy, The Keys to Life, and the Scottish Government's Strategy for Autism.
Triskelion will continue to support the New Roots project and plan to visit again in 2024.
"We are delighted to be working with EDC on the City Region Deal schemes and look forward to continuing this work as part of Arcadis’ commitment to improving people's lives, together with our colleagues at Sweco and Fairhurst.”
