Kilpatrick ASN Modular Learning Village

Completion: March 2023

Project value: £450k

Client: West Dunbartonshire Council

Sector: Education

Framework: SCAPE Scotland Construction

Location: West Dunbartonshire

"I'm exceptionally proud to be delivering a project in the town I was born and raised. For me, it's not just a project, it’s about giving back to the place that has given me so much. I’m excited to see the positive impact this will have for our community, and hope it's the first of many".

Chris Dooley,

Senior Site Manager, Morgan Sindall Construction

In partnership with Morgan Sindall, we successfully constructed two single-storey modular buildings and completed additional outdoor landscaping for West Dunbartonshire Council under the SCAPE Scotland Construction Framework.

These new additions provide four classrooms tailored to create a safe and comfortable setting for children requiring additional support. Not only do these structures enhance the learning environment, but they also allow the school to optimise its existing spaces and workshops.

The Modular Learning Village consisted of two units, each containing 5 modular compartments. The 10 separate compartments were produced off-site and installed on the site via crane lift, providing the school with an additional 4 classrooms, 2 toilets, and 2 storerooms.

Before ordering the cabins to be installed, the project team consulted with the school leadership team and facilitated a visit to an existing facility. This allowed the school staff to review their options and ensure the selected cabins met the needs of both staff and pupils. Additionally, discussions were held with the school leadership team regarding site safety to acquaint the staff with the established safety protocols.

Careful logistical planning was crucial to avoid issues in the live environment. With only one access road, roadworks were scheduled over the weekend to prevent school disruption. The crane was also used during the weekend to place cabins on site without disturbing the school. Deliveries were coordinated to avoid busy school times, ensuring safety.

Communication was vital. Clear communication with both the education team and suppliers emphasised the importance of considering the live environment and student presence during planning and activities.

Forward planning was essential due to the project's short duration, leaving no room for delays. Activities were planned a week or two and discussed with the school leadership team 1-2 weeks before ensuring proper timing for live environment works.

The project was completed within an 8-week program for the installation of a Modular Learning Village, adhering to both the scheduled timeframe and within budget.

The learning village offers a secure and comfortable environment for children with additional support needs, enabling the school to better utilise its existing spaces and workshops.
